30th March 2008 Southwold V Wymondham & Stowmarket
At the start of the second half Wymondham opened the scoring with a sol run to the corner. Callum made a strong run, gaining a lot of ground before a error with the final ball turned over possession. But again Southwold’s dogged defence put Wymondham under pressure with the resulting turn over. Maddy made a strong run and linking with Grace was only just stopped short of the line. But Wymondham were quick to break with the loose ball and score. A further score followed for Nick with one of his determined runs down the line. Callum followed with the move of the game, on the sixth tag, presented excellent support and being rewarded with his first try of the day. Wymondham finishing strongly ran out winners.
The second half opened with some super play from both teams attack and defence. Stowmarket eventually broke through for their second. Charles came back straightaway to re-establish our two try cushion with only two minutes left on the clock. Two further scores follow, one to each side, before the final whistle on a very well contested match.
Southwold Team Jake, Callum, Charles, Nick, Christopher, Maddy, Grace & Henry Southwold 7 - Wymondham 0 (Ben F 3, Joe 2, Will 1, Jack 1) Southwold 10 - Wymondham 1 (Joe 5, Jon 2, Oscar 1, Ben F 1, James 1) Southwold 9 - Wymondham 2 (Ben F 4, Joe 2, James 2, Jon 1) This should go down on record as Joe's day. The day that Joe found his ability to run through and around the opposition. An ability we have all known was there but only really showed a glimpse of itself at the N Walsham Festival. Joe ran in a total of 9 tries including probably a record 5 in one match. What's more he wasn't hogging the ball and was off-loading as much as others. Well done Joe, keep it up. The only event that could possibly over-shadow Joe's try fest was Oscar's try. Picking up a pass from Ben F at an undisclosed distance from the line and darting effortlessly in for a score in the corner. Well done Oscar. Though the Wymondham squad had enough players for two teams, it was clearly a routing. But it's worth noting that the opposition refused to give up, scoring more tries in the last match than the first. The easy victories gave us a chance to play all our squad as well as switch normal positions. For instance Joe scored his tries playing in the backs (worth noting). However most of the tries were scored by the usual suspects in their usual positions. Ben scored 8 from fly-half, James picked up 3 running down the wing, Jack's and Will's tries were typically darting from the back of the pack and Jon's were both from thundering through the middle (Jon was unwell on Sunday and was clearly not firing on all cylinders). For the Norwich Festival we simply need to improve the basics: rucking, tackling and running straight. The passing was good on Sunday but it could be improved still. I feel that we also ought to review our set pieces, penalties, scrums and line-outs, to maximise our ball. If we improve on these elements surely we are assured of more silverware on the 20th? |
