Seagulls U7s v Hadleigh U7s (H) (30-09-2007)

Seagulls 6 - Hadleigh 7
An exciting start to what will undoubtedly be a long and testing season and for many first timers in the Under 7’s. Fortunately the conditions on Sunday mornings have been sheer bliss (so far!) and we are delighted with the huge interest at this important level for the Club. We are equally grateful for the additional coaching support from no less than 4 of the fathers (much need at times!).

A whole new bunch of very enthusiastic players showed up for the first match and to ensure that they would come back again another day, everybody had an opportunity to play a part in what was to become a highly humorous and exciting game.

With some key players who have advanced well from last season, it meant we had a useful platform to work from. Charles and Jake have already showed real potential and were our main try scorers. Christopher also showed good support and made his first try for the Club.

However with numerous substitutions throughout, holding the line proved difficult to comprehend. We gave away possession all too often, with blatant forward passes and running into touch. That said, the Seagulls did try hard in defence, but the determined effort to tag Hadleigh’s faster players was not quite enough to come out on top.

Well done and better luck next time!

Seagulls U10s v Hadleigh U10s (H) (30-09-2007)

Seagulls 7 - Hadleigh 1
Seagulls 3 - Hadleigh 1
This season introduces the boys to contested scrums and lineouts and Hadleigh was the first team to test our new skills. Not surprisingly our front row (Joe, Jonathon and Jack) were dominant despite pushing against several well-drilled Hadleigh front rows. Irrelevant of who's put-in, we won the ball. However, a few early season aches forced changes and this unbalanced our push which resulted not only in more sore necks but also lost ball. Possession is critical, so we need to make sure that we get all combinations to work. Likewise in the lineouts, which were pretty evenly matched, we need to get all combinations of jumpers and throwers to the same standard.

The forwards not only won ball for the backs but also ran in their own well deserved tries with a brace from both Joe and Jonathon in the first game. Both boys breaking numerous tackles in the process. Matthew and Ben F both scored typically flamboyant tries with Will reminding us that he doesn't just tackle (he up-ended the biggest Hadleigh player in the first 5 minutes!) but can score too, with a darting run into the corner.

The second game was much tighter, probably due to our front row problems, but there were some great play with end-to-end runs involving numerous boys. If we can replicate these we will have another successful season. Matthew ran in two of the tries with Jonathon scoring his third of the day with another unstoppable charge.

Ben S had a great day scurrying around the pitch being in the right place at the right time and winning ball. The highlight was when he bundled Joe (and ball) over the line for his second try. Ben is our "Team Man of the Match".

Tackling in general wasn't as impressive as at the end of last season because they are not yet match fit, but there was a few big hits, particularly from James, Jonathon, Joe as well as the usual suspects Felix and Will. Finally, our new boy, Gabriel, got stuck in and showed promise.

The team had good start to the season with there experince from last season shining through against a new Hadleigh side.

William and Angus showed some very good surport play in game one ,and Oliver and Edward had a very good second game but most of all the team has started to defend together.
