The large crowd were treated to a fire and brimstone top of the table clash between two sides used to winning ways. Thetford got off to a flyer scoring two unanswered tries and a penalty to go 15 points up. Southwold's pride was wounded and the backs and forwards in unison began to take the game back to Theford. Quick penalties and clean rucking resulted in a try for Russell Hume as the forwards took the fight to the less mobile Theford pack. Duncan Hume converted and added two penalties to take the score to 15 - 13. Unfortunately the half-time whistle came too soon and Theford regrouped. Using the wind and their powerful forwards Thetford tried to keep Southwold pinned in their 22. In a tense second half neither team could quite break the deadlock. Thetford sent in their powerful runners and Southwold replied with quick hands and elusive breaks. However in the last five minutes the weight of tackling told and Thetford scored through the forwards after appling pressure at the lineout. The final score reflected a close and hard-fought match. Southwold must now dust themselves off and return to winning ways in an away fixture at Hadleigh this Saturday 2.15 kick-off. |
