Southwold opened the scoring after a Newmarket forward strayed off-side. Duncan Hume duly slotted the 3 points. Newmarket powered back with a sustained attack by their forwards,the ball was then spun out for the inside centre to rampage through despairing tackles. The conversion followed and the pendulum had swung Newmarket's way. Southwold were giving too many penalties away and the Newmarket backline began to fire. As with the fixture at Newmarket the teams were evenly matched thus it took a special moment to break the deadlock. The Southwold pack with Colman and Ward leading the way fought their in to the corner of Newmarkets' 22". Withey called a setmove in the backline, a miss pass and a dummy run in the middle opened the space for Currie to burst through the middle, D Hume had continued his run and was on hand to finish the move to score a decisive try. He added the conversion to edge Southwold ahead. The second half was a tense affair with players from both sides feeling the weight of the contact area and tackles. Newmarket lost a flanker to the sin bin for persistant infringments and the Southwold pack went on some powerful rolling mauls into Newmarket territory. For all the pressure Southwold only caqme away with a solitary penalty. Newmarket were still in the hunt and crossed the line only for it to be disallowed. However, their pressure lead to a further penalty to make it 13 - 10. Southwold again attacked the Newmarket 22" but could not get the score to kill the game off. In a tense end to the game both teams had their chances and Newmarket could have leveled the scores with a penalty shot which rebounded off the post. Southwold held out to claim victory and are two points off the top with a game in hand. Next week Southwold entertain Harwich in the Suffolk Plate on Sunday. Kick-off time TBA. |
