Southwold, however, produced a committed display of disciplined attacking rugby that the visiting team could not live with. The early signs were that it was going to be a tough game. Harwich started the game with a bang, searching for a weakness in the home defence. The home team held out for the opening quarter of the match. When Southwold got the ball in hand they made inroads into the inside channel and realised the wide open spaces were ripe to exploit. Luke Seaman scored his first try for the club finishing a simple but effective sweeping move from the backs. The forwards in the shape of Simon Ward and Rob Cross started to put pressure on in the set pieces and Harwich's early confidence was begining to evaporate. Southwold scored a second unconverted try before half-time. Right winger Piers Currie beat the remnants of the defence to touch down to give the home team a little breathing space. In the second half the game opened up. Southwold, through their dominant pack, enjoyed much of the territorial advantage. The rampaging Ben Copling and Spenser Smith allied with the sniping runs of Russell Hume and James Hall caused havoc in the Harwich ranks, opening holes all over the field. Harwich were further hampered by an injury to their fly-half and thus lost much of their shape and fluidity. This open, broken field suited Southwold. Lee Clack raced in for a try to make it a full house for the back three. Ben Copling gambolled in under the posts. Captain Adam Smith burrowed in and Fly-half Kevin Cayley danced his way over the try line after further excellent rucking form the southwold pack. The game was palyed in an excellent spirit and the club would like to again thank St Felix School for hosting the match. Next Saturday Southwold 1st XV play away at Felixstowe in the opening round of the Suffolk Plate. This is followed by the SRFC Annual Christmas Ball at St Felix. |
