The Southwold pack driven on by Ben Copling and organised by experienced campaigner Bruce Colman were a match for a strong Newmarket pack. Both packs fought tooth and nail for possession and with the exception of the occasional foray into the oppositions 22 cancelled each other out. Southwold took the lead in the first half after pressure from Southwold lead to a quick tap penalty from which Coplinf loped over. Duncan Hume converted, however, Southwold did not play their high tempo game and failed to capatalise on further possession. As the game wore on Newmarket ever more desperate for points really put pressure on the Southwold defence. One too many infringements led to a converted penalty which raised the tension in this tight encounter. Newmarket kept meeting a well drilled defensive unit but kept throwing bodies at the Southwold line. The finalkey moment was defensive scrum five yards out in the corner. Although the Southwold pack creaked and groaned they held out heroically leading to a turn-over and subsequent penalty that Southwold put into touch for the final whistle. On Saturday the 1st XV will entertain Ipswich YM on the Common. 2.30pm kick-off. Those observant members and supporters may notice the club-house has been demolished so we all will be repairing to the Kings Head after the match. |
