Having turned up far too early and taking part in 1st team warm up was quite a shock to some of the second team members but after taking that shock Southwold were quickly into their stride taking the game to Lakenham from the first whistle.Thirteen a side rugby took some adjusting to for some players but Southwold Captain Willy Larter quickly took advantage of the extra space available to him ( despite his 42 years young) and ran in two early tries to settle his young side down in the first 15 minutes, the second following a great breakway from Southwold senior rugby debutant Rich Thickett. After 25 minutes the game was in danger of turning into the Captain's showcase as he received an inside pass from fly half Mark Godfrey and after side stepping a couple of tacklers threw a miss-pass to James Cook who thundered over for a for another 5 points. Southwold then began to sit back watching others do the work and consiquently saw two late first half tries conceeded to a Lakenham side who never gave up all afternoon, the second from Southwolds own player Matt Godfrey. The half time whistle came at just about the right time for Southwold allowing captain Willy Larter to remind all of their responsibility and how basic rugby was required rather than "show boating" (not put quite so politely). The second half was a much more grittier affair with both packs vying for dominance, Southwold finally won through and provided the much required quality ball for their backs to shine with Gerrard Vejrych making big holes in Lakenhams defence., Paul Southam Mark Godfrey and Gerrard all adding tries, "Ginger" Mark completing two conversions. Special mention must go to referee Rachel Forest for keeping the game flowing, being the first female ref encountered by most players and generally doing a good job,Well done. Southwold second team man of the match: Rich Thickett ( a superb start to senior rugby ). next game :16/2/08 at home to Crusader Medics 1pm meet on the common. |
