Clacton showed their commitment to the cause from the first whistle. A combination of rolling mauls and hard running put the home side on the back foot for the opening of the match. This pressure told as chip and chase from Clacton caused confusion in the Southwold defence leading to a unconverted try. Finally stirred Southwold applied some pressure of their own, moving the larger clacton pack around the pitch through good drive and support play. This culminated in Russell Hume sniping down an undefended blinside to dot the ball down. Going into the second half it was either teams game to take. However the heavier, less mobile Clacton pack began to lose its edge and southwold took advantage. Southwold's next try came from a howler from the otherwise solid Clacton full-back. He batted a long kick from Withey back into play with no support near him. Good chasing from Darren Keable gave him the opportunity to scoop up the ball and run in unaopposed much to the disbelief of Clacton. Duncan Hume added the conversion, however, Clacton showed their spirit witha further unconverted try. As the second half woreon both side had difficulty carving out opportunitiesbut Clacton let Southwold in with a growing amount of penalties. Duncan Hume stretched the lead with a brace of penalties, then Spenser Smith took a quick tap and went on a trademark rampage to the line, slipping the ball to Duncan Hume to score the third and final try. Saturday 29th Southwold 1st XV, sponsored by Nicolson Construction, travel to Norwich Union to resume league action.
