The Southwold pack withstood the strong mauling of the Dereham forwards and more often than not turned over the ball at the breakdown allowing the backs to turn defence into attack. Scrum-half Kevin Cayley bossed the forwards and Southwold developed a platform for the potent backline. Duncan Hume put the first points on the board with a sweetly taken drop-goal. Good rucking from the forwards allowed the backs to execute a move that left the opposition standing for winger Darren keable to score in the corner. Dereham fought back at the end of the first half, only excellent and brave defence kept them out as they battered the tryline. In the second half Southwold scored a another try through a ruck and a smartly taken blind-side leading to a try for Ben Copling. With a penalty Southwold were 18-0 to the good, and with more clinical finishing could have been out of sight. Dereham stuck to the task and scored to late tries, that will not please the coaches, but the points were in the bag. On Saturday the 1st Team entertain Clacton on the Common at 3pm in the 2nd round of the EDF vase. |
