Ladies have you ever played Rugby? Have you ever seen a game of women's rugby? Did you know that Southwold Rugby Club has a women's side called the Swallows? Did you know that they trained every Wednesday at Reydon Rec' at 7.30pm?

Probably not! Although Southwold Ladies train all year, league, cup and friendly matches are played from the beginning of September to the end of April. Both training nights and matches last about 80 minutes and are fitness, therapy and anger management all in one! Rugby is fast, fun and physical. Most of the ladies who play for Southwold didn't know a flank forward from a fly half when they started. The ladies come from Halesworth, Lowestoft, Beccles, especially Wangford and some even from Southwold and Reydon. They range in age from 18 to 45 and come in every shape and size imaginable!

The Swallows were created in 1999/2000 as a way for women to keep fit without having to wear a leotard! Wednesday night training goes on throughout the year and off the pitch activity is as important as the rugby played on it. The Swallows are an integral part of the club represented on the committee and have indeed provided the club with it secretary and membership secretary over recent years and Sarah Doddington (07810 632987) is currently the club social secretary.

This season 2007/08 Southwold Swallows are in South East 3 with the Woodbridge Amazons, Deeping Devils, Peterborough, Harlow and Thetford and will be hoping to play friendlies with Fakenham, UEA Medics, Writtle College and possibly Chelmsford.

To away games we travel by bus and to afford to this we fund raise with our cake stall in Southwold Market Place twice a year. We also have a mad night in November raising money for Children in Need whilst raising our profile and the profits of many local landlords! We enjoy touring and have many happy memories of Skerries and the Costa del Nuneaton. If you would like to join the Swallows for training, on the pitch or in the bar please ring Mandy, Kim or Sarah and before you know it you will have learnt to ruck, maul and drink sambuca!
